Dog racing has been popular since ancient times, when dogs were used for hunting.Modern greyhound racing takes place on a oval-shaped track over distances from 210 m (689 ft) to 1,097 m (3,599 ft).An electric "hare" goes round the track, and the dogs are released from traps to chase it.In the UK most greyhound races are run with six dogs, but in the USA they are run with eight. There is a draw before the race to decide which trap each dog starts from. Each dog wears a coloured jacket which matches its starting trap.
